Snug Harbor is hidden at the end of Loop Lane, in the banana belt “suburb” (a.k.a. tiny oceanside forest community) of Trinidad, called Westhaven. The south end of Trinidad Bay arches towards the Westhaven cliffs, with the splendor of the California National Coastal Monument as its backdrop. This property represents a truly idyllic destiny situated in a rural coastal paradise. Perched high upon a cliff that rises steeply out of the Pacific Ocean, the home's quaint country charm stretches out its arms to greet visitors with bursts of vibrant colors from the glorious cottage garden. Approaching the entry path, salty ocean breezes, sounds of waves, and incoming marching swell lines draw attention west and south to the views of the vast sea.
The property’s location is ideal for anyone seeking to find some needed rest and relaxation. It also serves as a truly comfortable abode from which to launch a host of outdoor adventures, if that’s on the agenda. The most spectacular beaches are literally a stone’s throw away. Tucked away from any main roads, visitors will feel a sense of peaceful seclusion, while knowing that on the other side of the fence, a secret trail leads directly to beach, creek and surf access.
Cheerful flowers and ornamental shrubs encircle the house, leading to a side patio and a south facing deck. Whimsical and calming statuary, globes, and curious fixtures further adorn the splashes of greenery and blooms. The garden feeds your senses with color, sea spray, marine vistas, and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs. Lounging becomes mandatory on the well-furnished, ocean-view back porch. Kids will squeal when they spot the tree house, mini picnic table, and the hammock hung in the large conifers surrounding the yard.
Hot tub. View. Period.
The compelling distractions outside the house segue well into the interior. Upon entering, the vistas continually beckon through the picture windows throughout. The interior immediately emanates a welcoming warmth through its natural textiles, leather, basketry decorations, wood decor throughout, and fine art expressing all things lovely, mystical, and earthy.
The style of this home exudes country comfort. Untold stories are settled into the many antique furnishings in every room; armoir, hutch, farm-style drop-down table, vintage cooking ranges, writing desks, shabby chic love seat, high-backed bench, old-time end tables, lamps...the charm from a bygone era calls from every corner with warm wood tones. The colors of the walls are calming and neutral, with floor, counter and ceiling accents touting a variety of wood, stone, tile, attractive laminate, and persian rugs. A wood-burning stove sits atop a brick hearth to ensure the snugness of this harbor away from home.
This home sleeps up to 8 people with three bedrooms and two and a half baths. One bedroom has two full-size beds, generous closet space, a chalkboard-painted wall and windows with views of garden and ocean. The second bedroom has a queen bed, a small television, generous closet space, additional storage, a chair with ottoman, and ocean view.
The master bedroom’s king size bed rests in a cozy space complete with gas stove and mahogany (?) mantle. A clawfoot tub in the opposite corner has a hand-held shower attachment. It’s perfectly placed near the gas stove and an ocean view. A small porch can be accessed through a slider door for optimal seascape viewing. There is a walk-in closet, plus a fully-appointed master bathroom with deeply colored tiles in the shower.
A second, full bathroom sheds plenty of natural light from a skylight above the tile shower and porcelain bath. The floor brightens the space with vibrant hues reminiscent of tropical shores.
Downstairs, near the kitchen, modern laundry appliances can be found in the pantry room. The accents in the kitchen are simple, colorful, vintage and whimsical. The antique cooking range is surrounded by sturdy butcher block countertops. An extra guest room contains a futon sofa that can be converted to a queen-size bed. This room’s windows overlook the garden expanse.
There’s so much to explore and enjoy in this abode. Sit down in an old desk to handwrite a letter or sketch a surrounding scene to send to a loved one as you gaze out to sea or garden. Play chess on a sturdy and lovely vintage table. Curl up on the long, cushioned window seat overlooking the south view porch to bask in the sun with a good book. Pick up the guitar to strum a new tune as you swing lazily on the hammock overlooking the sparkling horizon at sunset. Enjoy a hot tub after a day of kayaking, surfing, fishing, biking and hiking around Trinidad. Cook a gourmet, locally-caught seafood meal with fresh, local organic vegetables on the vintage range. Discover the scents and lovely forms of the garden scape, framed by verdant conifers and white-barked alder. Laze on the deck to birdwatch in your own private aviary overlooking the swells. Of course, there is a large flat screen TV in this home, but unplugging is highly recommended in this paradise!
